Psychological aspect

Experiencing limb loss is a profound and life-altering event that encompasses a wide array of psychological challenges. First and foremost, it's important to recognize that grieving is a natural response to this loss. Coping with limb loss can evoke a rollercoaster of emotions, from shock and denial to anger, sadness, and eventually acceptance. Navigating these emotional complexities can be overwhelming, and it's entirely normal to seek support during this journey. Counseling can be a valuable resource, providing a safe space to process your feelings and develop effective coping strategies. Understanding the five stages of loss—denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance—can also help you recognize and manage these emotions as you progress towards reclaiming your live after limb loss. Remember that it's okay to seek help, reach out to loved ones, and lean on your support network during this challenging time.

Preparation

Effective preparation of the residual limb is crucial for a successful transition to wearing a prosthesis after an amputation. This process involves several essential steps guided by your prosthetist. Firstly, wound care is vital to ensure that any surgical incisions or healing areas are properly managed to prevent infection and promote healing. Secondly, desensitization techniques are employed to help the residual limb become accustomed to the pressures and sensations of wearing a prosthesis, ensuring comfort during everyday use. Scar mobilization is another critical aspect, as it helps reduce the stiffness and limitations that scars may impose on limb movement. Lastly, proper "coning" of the limb is essential to ensure an optimal fit within the prosthetic socket, promoting stability and comfort. Working closely with your prosthetist through these stages ensures that your residual limb is well-prepared for the prosthetic fitting, ultimately enhancing your overall prosthetic experience and quality of life.

Mobilizing

The next phase of your journey towards mobility is a crucial one. During this stage, you will learn how to walk again after the amputation, typically using crutches or a walking frame. While you may not yet be using a prosthesis, the exercises and training are aimed at strengthening the remaining muscles, enhancing your balance, and improving your overall health. This phase is about regaining your independence and confidence in your mobility, setting the foundation for a successful prosthetic fitting in the future. It's an important step on your path towards reclaiming your active lifestyle and achieving your mobility goals.

Prosthesis

The next phase of your rehabilitation journey is the prosthesis, the pivotal step towards regaining your mobility and independence. We consider various factors when designing your prosthesis, such as your age, weight, occupation, hobbies, and ambitions. To ensure a precise fit, we will create a duplication of your residual limb using plaster of Paris. Once this detailed process is complete, the prosthesis is meticulously designed, manufactured and assembled, ready for the fitting stage. This phase marks a significant milestone in your recovery, as it brings you one step closer to achieving your mobility goals and embracing life to the fullest. We will be there every step of the way to ensure the best possible outcome for your unique needs and aspirations.
